Android - Setup direct mode from a clean install environment

After September 16th, 2016, the majority of Eyefi 1.0 functions will no longer work. Direct Mode (where the Eyefi card broadcasts its own ad hoc network for other devices to connect to) is not directly affected by this service shut down, and could serve as a temporary stop gap should you need some functionality to continue. This setup will only be possible prior to the September 16th date, so it is important to follow these instructions prior to that date in order to set your X2 card up for Direct Mode transfers.

NOTE: THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT DIRECT MODE CONFIGURATIONS WILL CONTINUE FUNCTIONING AFTER THE SEPTEMBER 16TH 2016 SHUT DOWN.

Eyefi Direct Mode provides you with the freedom to send photos and videos directly to your Android smartphone or tablet. When you enable Eyefi Direct Mode, your Eyefi card will broadcast a pre-defined wireless network that your Android device can use to receive photos and video from the card. In order to use Eyefi Direct Mode, you will need to have the following:

This article will guide users who do not have any of the Eyefi applications installed set up Direct Mode for their device. If you already have our Eyefi applications installed, see our Working Environment Setup for Android article

Setting up Direct Mode from a clean install environment

Setting up Eyefi Direct Mode involves installing or updating Eyefi Center, updating your Eyefi card firmware, deploying your Eyefi card's Direct Mode WiFi network, and pairing your Eyefi card to your Android device. After you complete these steps, your Eyefi card will broadcast its Direct Mode network to your Android device whenever it has media to transfer to the Eyefi app.

Part I: Enable Direct Mode on your X2 card

  1. Install Eyefi Center.
  2. Update your Eyefi card Firmware.
  3. Launch Eyefi Center and insert your Eyefi card.
  4. Select your card from the Device list and click the Settings icon.
  5. Select the Network tab, select the Direct Mode sub-tab.
  6. Check the When no known Wi-Fi networks are in range, start the Direct Mode network check box.*
  7. Choose different settings for the Wait sliders, if desired.
  8. Click the Save button.

* Note: Your Eyefi card will only deploy its Direct Mode network if there are no other networks for the Eyefi Card to join.

Part II: Download and set up the Eyefi App for Android

  1. Go to the Eyefi app for Android page on your Android device.
  2. Download Eyefi for Android.
  3. Make sure that Wi-Fi is enabled under the Wireless & network settings.
  4. Install Eyefi for Android
  5. Tap Sign In at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Sign into your Eyefi account.
  7. Tap the Settings icon.

    Note: If your phone has a Menu button, press it, then tap Settings in the menu that appears.
  8. Tap Eyefi device settings, then select the Eyefi card you would like to pair with your Android device.
  9. Tap the box to check the pairing option.
  10. Select the media types you would like to transfer. If you are changing the pairing from another device, tap Switch.
  11. Tap the Ok button
  12. You will see a small pop-up at the bottom of the screen stating that you have successfully paired your Eyefi card with your Android device.

Your Eyefi Card and Android device are now paired. When your Eyefi card has photos ready to transfer, it will start a Direct Mode network. About 30 seconds later, your device will prompt you to disconnect from the internet and connect to your Eyefi card's Direct Mode network. Press the Connect button to start the file transfer.

Part III: Send photos to your Android device

  1. Insert your Eyefi card into your camera and shoot several pictures.
  2. Start the Eyefi app if it is not already running.
  3. If prompted, click Connect to connect to Eyefi card Direct Mode network (this may happen automatically).
  4. Your phone or tablet will begin to receive photos in a few moments.

Setting up Direct Mode from a working environment

Part I: Enable Direct Mode for your X2 card

  1. Open Eyefi Center on your computer
  2. Update your Eyefi Card Firmware, if necessary.
  3. Connect your Eyefi card to your computer using the Eyefi card reader.
  4. Select your Eyefi card from the Device list and click the Settings icon.
  5. Go to the Networks tab and then select Direct Mode.
  6. Check the When no known Wi-Fi networks are in range, start the Direct Mode network check box.
  7. Choose different settings for the Wait sliders, if desired.
  8. Click the Save button.

Part II: Remove any currently-added wireless network from your X2 card

  1. Insert your Eyefi card into the USB card reader.
  2. Insert the USB card reader into your computer.
  3. Launch Eyefi Center.
  4. Click the Settings icon to open the Settings panel.
  5. The Networks tab is selected by default.
  6. Click the Private Networks sub-tab if it is not already selected.
  7. Select the check-box next to each of the currently configured wireless networks, then click the Remove button.

Part III: Pair your X2 card with your Android device

  1. Make sure that Wi-Fi is enabled under the Wireless & network settings.
  2. Open the Eyefi application for Android
  3. Tap Sign In at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Sign into your Eyefi account.
  5. Tap the Settings icon.
